At the very end of the book, it shows Taelan as a twenty-one year old being knighted as a Paladin as the Silver Hand, and he is obviously a Paladin as Highlord Taelan Fordring, when you fight him it either takes place 10+ years in the future, or Blizz seriously screwed up the age timeline almost the same way as they did with Whitemane, Mograin and Vishas. The location of this NPC is unknown. Tirion Fordring was waiting nearby for his son and saw him cut down and, overcome with loss and outrage, avenged Taelan's death by killing Isillien.

Taelan will respawn after a while if you 'fail', release and abandon the quest before Tirion shows up. So if this happens to you just ressurect, get your costume back and go wait in Hearthglen for him and do it again.
